Trump Says Torture Works – Says Intelligence Officials Tell Him It Is So – CBS News

President Trumps statements contradict a 2014 Senate Intelligence Committee report that says the CIA’s enhanced interrogation techniques were ineffective.
President Trump said in an interview we viewed on Wednesday that he has asked “intelligence officials” about the use of enhanced interrogation techniques on terror suspects. They told him Torture “works.”
“I have spoken as recently as 24 hours ago with people at the highest level of intelligence” the president stated in the interview “and I asked them the question: Does it work? Does torture work?” – “And the answer was yes, absolutely.”
However he did say he would “rely” on his Cabinet as to when and where to use it (torture techniques like waterboarding).
“I will rely on [CIA Director] Pompeo and [Defense Secretary] Mattis and my group and if they don’t want to do, that’s fine. If they do want to do, then I will work toward that end,” – “I want to do everything within the bounds of what you’re allowed to do legally.” -president Donald Trump.

British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday embraced U.S. President Donald Trump as a friend and ally, but firmly rejected the president’s suggestion that torture might be acceptable. May told reporters aboard her Royal Air Force plane flying to the U.S. that “we absolutely condemn the use of torture.”
And, while Prime Minister May praised Trump’s dedication to fighting violent Islamic extremism, she seemed to reject his suggestion for a ban on immigration by Muslims. She once called the idea “divisive, stupid and wrong.”

Enhanced interrogation can entail techniques such as slapping a person in the face, sleep deprivation, cramped confinement and waterboarding — the last of which involves reducing airflow with water to trigger the feeling of drowning.
And did we mention it is illegal?

UPDATE:
On Thursday, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said the US would not engage in torture, and Senator John McCain, a fellow Republican and a prisoner of war who was tortured in Vietnam, has come out even more strongly on Twitter.
