Want To Live Longer – Move To Canada ?

Canada Universal Health Care
Where can you find Universal Health Care? Look North!

Oops – How did that happen.

How long can rich Americans expect to live? Probably not as long as the poor in Europe. According a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine , the wealthiest middle-aged and older Americans have roughly the same likelihood of dying over a 12-year period as the poorest adults in northern and western Europe.

So statistically speaking, being wealthy in the U.S. means you only live as long as being poor in Europe. However, even rich Americans can seem to avoid the Grimm Reaper as easily as poor Europeans. With widespread universal health care, many European countries offer free or heavily subsidized higher education and more comprehensive unemployment benefits compared with the U.S. This can contribute to a lower stress level, even among the poorer European population. And stress is a widely recognized causative factor leading to higher mortality rate.

“A lot of these countries have social welfare programs that don’t prevent people from losing their jobs or experiencing poverty, but when they go through those tough times, it doesn’t threaten their health…” – Dr. Steven Woolf,  professor of family medicine and population health at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

Rich or Poor in the U.S. – More Stress – Quicker Death

So what’s with moving to Canada? Well, Canada has a universal health care system funded through taxes. This means that any Canadian citizen or permanent resident can apply for public health insurance. Do the math, more people in Canada getting health care = lower mortality rate than in the U.S.A., you get an “A”.
